Year 6

Autumn Term:

Welcome to Year Six.

As pupils start their final year at Bickleigh Down, it is always an exciting but somewhat daunting time. Every school year is important but Year Six has extra significance as it ends with Statutory Tests and preparations for that all important move to secondary school. Our aim is to make this process as stress free as possible. Yes, it is a very busy year and we have high expectations, but this will ensure that all the children reach their full potential and achieve all that they are capable of.

We also have our residential visit to Barton Hall, which is really exciting. Those children remaining in school will have a more active and practical range of activities planned.

The teaching team this year is Mrs Rundell and Mr Burke, with Miss Freeman teaching Mr Burke’s class on a Friday. Mrs Wills is the Teaching Assistant With Mrs Chudley and Mrs Cannon remaining with the year group to support specific children, The teachers’ planning time is on a Monday morning when Miss Freeman and Mr Harden will teach RE and computing. If you wish to speak to any of the staff, please put a note in your child's diary or arrange an appointment through the office.

Children will be split into groups for reading and maths so will not necessarily have all their lessons taught by their class teacher. Homework is set for English and maths every Monday. These are both set on-line and should be completed by the following Monday.  Homework MUST be completed by all children, but they should be encouraged to complete it independently as part of their preparation for secondary school. Similarly, spellings are tested each week, on a Monday, and children are expected to show that they have learned their spellings daily. Lists are sent home at the beginning of the term and a copy is available below.

The children will need to bring their PE kit, with appropriate footwear, to school every Wednesday and Thursday as this is when our indoor and outdoor PE lessons are scheduled. It is helpful for PE kits to remain in school, when washed, as extra sessions are often added in preparation for outside events and competitions.

Please make sure that every item of clothing, water bottles, lunchboxes etc. is named so that anything which goes missing can quickly be returned.
