Happy New Year

This term our topics are ‘Fairy Tales’ and ‘The World Around Us’.

In the first half of term the children will be looking at various familiar fairy tales. The role play will be a theatre where we will be encouraging the children to retell the stories, dress up as the characters, make up dances and really immerse themselves in the stories. We will be ending the topic with a Fairy Tale Ball where the children are invited to come in to school dressed as their favourite fairy tale character.

In the second half of term we will be looking at where we live and comparing this to countries around the world. The children will have the opportunity to taste different foods, speak different languages and learn about the cultures of other countries.

We will also be having ‘child initiated weeks’ where the children get to choose the topic we are basing our work on that week. These weeks are a great opportunity to encouraging writing from the children who wouldn’t usually choose to write, to cover topics that we wouldn’t usually think to cover and to have a lot of fun following the children’s’ interests. We will let you know in our weekly letters when these weeks are and the topics the children have chosen.

If you would like to speak to any member of the foundation team please do not hesitate to catch us in the morning, after school or by writing in your child’s home school diary.

Home Learning

Please see the weekly letter for an overview of what we are doing each week. We encourage the children to learn through play so please have a look at the areas / topics we are covering and play games / role plays that include these.

The weekly letter also contains RWI links for your child's phonics group. If your child is well enough please watch these with them so that they don't miss out on the sounds we are covering. Please also practise name writing, letter and number formation.

Alphablocks and Numberblocks on cbeebies iplayer are great. We use these lots in school. I would recommend watching a couple of these. I know the children love watching them as well.

Each week we will download a few paper based activities that you can have a go at at home with your child but please don't feel that you have to. At school these would be out but the children aren't made to do them, they choose to do them if they want. We will also download the maths slides that we will be using each day in class.

Please upload any work to Tapestry and email if you have any questions.

Welcome to Foundation.

This term our main aim is to settle the children into school, spending time getting to know our new Red Bears and Blue Bears and getting them used to the new rules and routines.

We encourage the children to be as independent as they can be, but are always here to support each child (and parents) in any way we can and when needed.

This half term our focus is ‘Amazing Me’. We will use this topic to get to know the children, their friendships, likes, dislikes and interests. We will also spend time assessing their individual skills to enable us to plan a tailored curriculum through games and little activities.

In the second half of term we will be looking at ‘celebrations’. These will include Diwali,  Christmas and Bonfire night. We will also be thinking about people who help up in our community.

Each week we will send home a letter detailing the areas of the curriculum we will be covering and how you can help at home.

Our Foundation Team would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Foundation Stage and Bickleigh Down C of E Primary School. We are looking forward to the year ahead which we know, as always will fly by but will also be full of many fun and exciting times and challenges.

Please feel free to approach any member of the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) team with any questions or queries.
